Queen and Prince's hybrid fruit? (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

quince

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'fruit?' is the definition.
(type of fruit)

'queen and prince's hybrid' is the wordplay.
'queen' becomes 'qu' (abbreviation for queen).
'and' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'prince's hybrid' becomes 'ince' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'qu'+'ince'='QUINCE'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for quince that I've seen before include "Peter --- (MND); fruit" , "Shakespearean part?" , "Golden fruit" , "Dream chippy" , "Acid-flavoured fruit" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
