Crossword Genius

Queen's cut up about poet (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

burns

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'poet' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'queen's cut up' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'queen' could be 'r' (r is abbreviation regina. e.g. in ER ) and 'r' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'buns' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

'about' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for burns that I've seen before include "Cremates -- Scottish poet, d.1796" , "Tam o' Shanter poet, d. 1796" , "Overcooks" , "Is on fire" , "What Tyger does for Blake" .)
