Rabbit's tail trimmed to a point (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

scut

'rabbit's tail' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'trimmed to a point' is the wordplay.
'trimmed' becomes 'cut' ('cut' can be a synonym of 'trimmed').
'to a' says to put letters next to each other (I've seen this in other clues).
'point' becomes 's' (S is an example).
'cut' after 's' is 'SCUT'.

(Other definitions for scut that I've seen before include "Short tail of rabbit, deer etc" , "Reindeer's tail" , "Small tail as of rabbit" , "(Hare's) short upright tail" , "Short erect tail" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
