Remove a garment with some dirt on it (6)

I believe the answer is:
divest
'remove' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)
'a garment with some dirt on it' is the wordplay.
'a garment' becomes 'vest' (vest is a type of garment or item of clothing).
'with some dirt' becomes 'di' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'on it' says to put letters next to each other.
'vest' after 'di' is 'DIVEST'.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for divest that I've seen before include "Strip, denude" , "Strip off clothes, take away" , "Deprive, strip" , "Take off, say clothing" , "disrobe" .)
