Crossword Genius

Reveal the style of the French (3,2)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

let on

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'reveal' is the definition.
(I know that reveal can be written as let on)

'style of the french' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'style' could be 'ton' (term for style or fashion) and 'ton' is present in the answer.
'the french' could be 'le' ('the' in French) and 'le' is present in the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'the' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for let on that I've seen before include "Pretend informally or permit to board" , "give the game away" , "Pretend, feign" , "Reveal information" , "Disclose awareness" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
