Crossword Genius

Rishi, say, tax-cutting leader of Opposition? (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

tory

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'opposition?' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both people as well as being singular nouns.
Maybe they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'rishi say tax-cutting leader of' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'of' could be 'o' and 'o' is present in the answer.
'tax' could be 'try' (I've seen this in another clue) and 'try' is present in the leftover letters.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for tory that I've seen before include "Politician; tyro (anag.)" , "blue" , "English Conservative politician or Donegal island" , "A British Conservative" , "Traditionalist" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
