Crossword Genius

Rough speed on a road (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

tearaway

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'rough' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'speed on a road' is the wordplay.
'speed on' becomes 'tear' (tearing is a kind of speeding. I am not sure about the 'on' bit.).
'road' becomes 'way' (I've seen this in other clues).
'tear'+'a'+'way'='TEARAWAY'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for tearaway that I've seen before include "Unruly youth" , "unruly character" , "Reckless violent person" , "Might I stir" , "reckless type" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
