Crossword Genius

Sailors going after first class means of transport (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

cabs

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'means of transport' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are plural nouns, I don't see how one could define the other.

'sailors going after first class' is the wordplay.
'sailors' becomes 'abs' (AB is short for able seaman).
'going after' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'first class' becomes 'c' (1st letter of 'class').
'abs' after 'c' is 'CABS'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for cabs that I've seen before include "American taxis" , "Vehicles" , "Taxies" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
