Crossword Genius

Sauces from Italy served up and desirable sweet food (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

sugarplum

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'sauces from italy' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't see how they can define each other.

'up and desirable sweet food' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'desirable' could be 'plum' (I've seen this before) and 'plum' is found within the answer.
'food' could be 'sugar' (sugar is a kind of food) and 'sugar' is found in the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'served' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for sugarplum that I've seen before include "Sweet thing" , "Dance of the ... Fairy" , "Sweet or sweetener" , "term of endearment" , "fairy dancing" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
