Say goodbye to the sole chance (4)

I believe the answer is:
lose
'say goodbye' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are verbs in their base form, I cannot see how one could define the other.
'the sole chance' is the wordplay.
'sole' can be anagrammed to 'LOSE'.
But, I am not sure how the anagram is indicated.
'to' is the link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for lose that I've seen before include "Misplace" , "Fail to keep" , "Be beaten" , "Suffer a defeat" , "go down" .)
