Crossword Genius

Say wide court passage (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

extract

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'passage' is the definition.
(I know that extract is a type of passage)

'say wide court' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'wide' could be 'extra' (cricket, extra awarded for wide ball) and 'extra' is found within the answer.
'court' could be 'ct' (abbreviation used in road names) and 'ct' is found in the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for extract that I've seen before include "(Piece) remove(d)" , "Lift from book" , "Short passage from a longer work" , "Equality of civil rights" , "Take out with effort, say a tooth" .)

I've seen this clue in The Sun.
