Ross

I believe the answer is:

abrade

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'scrape off' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'apple topping and bread crumbs' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
an anagram of 'bread' is 'brade' which is located in the answer.
A single letter 'a' remains which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for abrade that I've seen before include "Shave" , "Chafe" , "Scrape away, erode" , "Wear away by erosion" , "Day breaks? > Start as before" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
