Crossword Genius

Seam rolled back to cover silver screw (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

wages

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'screw' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't understand how one could define the other.

'seam rolled back to cover silver' is the wordplay.
'seam' becomes 'sew' (I've seen this in another clue).
'rolled back' shows that the letters should be reversed in order.
'to cover' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'silver' becomes 'Ag' (Ag is the chemical symbol for silver).
'sew' back-to-front is 'wes'.
'wes' placed around 'ag' is 'WAGES'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for wages that I've seen before include "Money for work" , "Reward" , "Weekly pay" , "Payments to employee for work" , "Work pay" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
