Sharing out reward, ultimately two pairs in contention? (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

divvying

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'sharing out' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'reward ultimately two pairs in contention?' is the wordplay.
'ultimately' says to take the final letters.
'two pairs' becomes 'iv' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'in contention?' becomes 'vying' (I've seen this before).
The last letter of 'reward' is 'd'.
'd'+'iv'+'vying'='DIVVYING'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for divvying that I've seen is " Sharing out".)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
