I believe the answer is:

'shows appreciation' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)
'many a footnote' is the wordplay.
'many' becomes 'c' (C is the Roman numeral for l00).
'a footnote' becomes 'laps' (I can't explain this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'c'+'laps'='CLAPS'
'of' acts as a link.
