Crossword Genius

Shrew at Padua carried by ship moves across ice (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

skates

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'moves across ice' is the definition.
I can't tell whether this definition defines the answer.

'shrew at padua carried by ship' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'shrew' could be 'kate' (Katherina or Kate in The Taming of the Shrew) and 'kate' is found within the answer.
'ship' could be 'ss' (prefix in ship names eg SS Great Britain) and 'ss' is present in the remaining letters.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for skates that I've seen before include "Boots for ice rink" , "Sports equipment worn on the feet" , "Boots with blades or wheels" , "'Sports equipment, with wheels or blades (6)'" , "You get them on to move fast" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
