'shut up' is the definition.
The answer and definition are different parts of speech. However, past participle verbs and adjectives sometimes mean the same thing.

'shut up' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'shut up' could be 'immure' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'immure' is found in the answer.
A single letter 'd' remains which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for immured that I've seen before include "Imprisoned, shut in" , "Incarcerated, walled up" , "Incarcerated, put behind bars" , "Enclosed or imprisoned" , "Locked up in jail" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
