Crossword Genius

Shy contender, he turned out founder of a dynasty (5,3,6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

henry the second

'founder of a dynasty' is the definition.
(first king of the House of Plantagenet)

'shy contender he turned out' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'he' could be 'henry' and 'henry' is located in the answer.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

(Another definition for henry the second that I've seen is " king".)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
