Crossword Genius

Small angry bees flying (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

swarm

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'angry bees flying' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't understand how one could define the other.

'small' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'small' could be 's' (abbreviation - e.g. clothes size) and 's' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'warm' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for swarm that I've seen before include "Mass of flying insects" , "Large cloud (of insects)" , "Go to form new colony" , "some setting up colony" , "Body of bees" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
