Crossword Genius

Small carnivore: no more than a moggy, do we hear? (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

meerkat

'small carnivore' is the definition.
(meerkats are small carnivores)

I can't explain the rest of the clue.

(Other definitions for meerkat that I've seen before include "Small southern African mammal" , "Wild animal" , "Small South American cat-like animal, has four toes" , "Strange tee mark made by the four-toed animal" , "Rake met (anag) - type of mongoose" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
