Crossword Genius

Small items of consuming interest (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

nibbles

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'items of consuming interest' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are plural nouns, I can't see how one could define the other.

'small' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'small' could be 's' (abbreviation - e.g. clothes size) and 's' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'nibble' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for nibbles that I've seen before include "Takes tiny bites" , "Food for drinks party" , "Eats with small bites" , "Bites off small pieces" , "Small savoury snacks" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
