Crossword Genius

Solitary individual such as Shylock, did you say? (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

loner

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'solitary individual' is the definition.
(lonely person)

'shylock did you say?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'you' could be 'one' (I've seen this before) and 'one' is found within the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'such as' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for loner that I've seen before include "One shunning society" , "Recluse" , "Solitary individual, prefers own company" , "Individualist" , "Isolated person" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
