Sort of clothing for resting actors? (4-3)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

cast-off

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'sort of clothing for resting' is the definition.
I can't tell whether this definition defines the answer.

'actors?' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'actors?' could be 'cast' (group of actors) and 'cast' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'off' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for cast-off that I've seen before include "Laid aside" , "Discard" , "Finish knitting - go to sea" , "Stop knitting - prepare for sea" , "Abandon - remove mooring lines - knot stitches" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
