Sort of saw for cutting a joint? (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

tenon

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'joint?' is the definition.
(I've seen this in other clues)

'sort of saw for cutting a' is the wordplay.
'sort of saw for' becomes 'ten' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'cutting' means to remove the last letter.
'a' becomes 'one'.
'one' with its final letter taken away is 'on'.
'ten'+'on'='TENON'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for tenon that I've seen before include "Piece of wood that fits into a mortise" , "Piece of wood fitting into a mortice" , "Mortise counterpart" , "Wooden projection shaped to fit in a mortise joint" , "One projecting" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
