Crossword Genius

Spare cash initially wasted, minor problem (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

scrape

'minor problem' is the definition.
'scrape' can be an answer for 'problem' (thesaurus). I'm not certain of the 'minor' bit.

'spare cash initially wasted' is the wordplay.
'cash' becomes 'c'.
'initially' is a charade indicator (letters next to each other).
'wasted' indicates anagramming the letters.
'spare' put after 'c' is 'cspare'.
'cspare' anagrammed gives 'SCRAPE'.

(Other definitions for scrape that I've seen before include "Clean with edge of knife" , "Take the surface off" , "Recaps about abrasion" , "embarassing situation" , "Scratch; just make (living)" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
