Crossword Genius

Sportsman put off, missing start, following cramp (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

cricketer

'sportsman' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'put off missing start following cramp' is the wordplay.
'put off' becomes 'deter' (both can mean to discourage).
'missing start' means to remove the first letter.
'following' says to put letters next to each other.
'cramp' becomes 'crick' (crick is a kind of cramp).
'deter' with its initial letter taken off is 'eter'.
'eter' after 'crick' is 'CRICKETER'.

(Other definitions for cricketer that I've seen before include "Point one may be at" , "Batsman, bowler or fielder" , "He may be a bowler or a batsman" , "one may be out on the field" , "Player of traditional English game" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
