Crossword Genius

Spread talk about Old Time Religion's opening (11)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

proliferate

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'spread' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'talk about old time religion's opening' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'about' could be 'a' (abbreviation in Chambers) and 'a' is found in the answer.
'old' could be 'o' (common abbreviation eg in OE for Old English) and 'o' is located in the answer.
'time' could be 't' and 't' is found within the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for proliferate that I've seen before include "Grow rapidly in number" , "snowball" , "spread" , "Multiply, expand" , "Increase rapidly in number" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
