I believe the answer is:

(I've seen this in another clue)
'spy holding you up' is the wordplay.
'spy' becomes 'bond' (James Bond).
'holding' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'you' becomes 'ye' (historical version of 'you').
'up' says the letters should be written backwards (in down clue: letters go upwards).
'ye' reversed gives 'ey'.
'bond' enclosing 'ey' is 'BEYOND'.
