I believe the answer is:
drove off
'started' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both related to competing as well as being past participle verbs.
Maybe you can see a link between them that I can't see?
'the green and accelerated away' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'away' could be 'off' ('off' can be a synonym of 'away') and 'off' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'drove' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
