Crossword Genius

Stick one's neck out (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

crane

'stick one's neck out' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'neck out' is the wordplay.
'neck' becomes 'craned' (I have seen 'stretched neck' mean 'craned' so perhaps 'neck' could also mean 'craned').
'out' means to remove the last letter.
'craned' with its final letter taken off is 'CRANE'.

(Other definitions for crane that I've seen before include "Wading bird to lift heavy objects?" , "Lifting device; stretch (neck)" , "Bird; camera platform" , "Wading bird - lifting device" , "Tall wading bird can lift heavy loads" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
