Crossword Genius

Stop after snake makes for pitch (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

asphalt

'for pitch' is the definition.
(pitch mixture for surfacing roads)

'stop after snake' is the wordplay.
'stop' becomes 'halt' (halt can mean to stop).
'after' says to put letters next to each other.
'snake' becomes 'asp' (asp is a kind of snake).
'halt' put after 'asp' is 'ASPHALT'.

'makes' acts as a link.

(Other definitions for asphalt that I've seen before include "Bituminous substance used in building" , "Road surface material" , "surface of path" , "Dark natural pitch" , "What you see on roads" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times and The Telegraph.
