Crossword Genius

Symbolic rods of possible press, etc. (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

sceptres

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'symbolic rods' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are plural nouns, I don't understand how they can define each other.

'possible press etc' is the wordplay.
'press etc' can be anagrammed to 'SCEPTRES'.
However, I am not clear how the anagram is indicated.

'of' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for sceptres that I've seen before include "Batons borne by kings" , "some staff" , "Insignia of royalty" , "Royal staffs for press etc" , "Offer respects to crowns" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
