Taking off after key found on computer? It's what prisoner might be doing (8)
I believe the answer is:
escaping
'it's what prisoner might be doing' is the definition.
(a prisoner might escape from prison)
'taking off after key' is the wordplay.
'taking off' becomes 'aping' (I've seen this before).
'after' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'key' becomes 'esc' ('Escape' key on a computer keyboard).
'aping' after 'esc' is 'ESCAPING'.
'found on computer?' is the link.
I am not very happy about this link. Some or all of it may belong to another bit of the clue.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for escaping that I've seen before include "Breaking free" , "Breaking out of confinement" , "Getting free" , "Fleeing" , "Getting away from confinement" .)
