Talked out of, underworld walked through water by the sound of it (9)
I believe the answer is:
dissuaded
'talked out' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both to do with communicating as well as being past participle verbs.
Maybe they are linked in a way I don't understand?
'underworld walked through water by the sound of it' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'underworld' could be 'dis' (underworld in classical mythology) and 'dis' is found within the answer.
'it' could be 'e' ('e' can mean 'electronic' which is similar to 'IT') and 'e' is present in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
'of' is the link.
