Crossword Genius

The Spanish are able to pop back for summit (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

pinnacle

'summit' is the definition.
(pinnacle is a kind of summit)

'the spanish are able to pop back' is the wordplay.
'the spanish' becomes 'el'.
'are able' becomes 'can'.
'to pop' becomes 'nip' ('nip out' and 'pop out' can both mean to go out).
'back' says the letters should be written in reverse.
'el'+'can'+'nip'='elcannip'
'elcannip' written backwards gives 'PINNACLE'.

'for' is the link.

(Other definitions for pinnacle that I've seen before include "The highest point, peak" , "Highest point of success" , "The highest level" , "Place inn on the very top" , "Apex" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
