'try' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both to do with social activities as well as being verbs in their base form.
Maybe you can see a link between them that I can't see?

'mediate introducing some inept boss' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
an anagram of 'inept' is 'tepin' which is present in the answer.
A single letter 's' remains which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'to' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for step in that I've seen before include "Interrupt" , "Shoe with no fastenings" , "Substitute" , "Type of garment" , "Intervene dramatically, or at a senior level" .)

I've seen this clue in the Irish Times.
