Two rabbits and a toad (10)
I believe the answer is:
natterjack
'a toad' is the definition.
(I know that natterjack is a type of true toad)
'two rabbits' is the wordplay.
'two rabbits' means two substitutions for 'rabbit'.
'rabbit' becomes 'natter' (both can mean to talk excessively).
'rabbit' becomes 'jack' (jackrabbit is a type of hare).
'natter'+'jack'='NATTERJACK'
'and' acts as a link.
(Another definition for natterjack that I've seen is " Small toad".)
I've seen this clue in The Independent.
