Crossword Genius

Two tiny dogs with a woolly ball (3-3)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

pom-pom

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'ball' is the definition.
(I have seen 'Fluffy ball ' mean 'pom-pom' so perhaps 'ball' could also mean 'pom-pom')

I don't understand how the remainder of the clue works.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for pom-pom that I've seen before include "Woollen clothing ornament" , "Fluffy ball - type of gun" , "Decorative tuft or ball - mop up twice" , "Woollen ball" , "Ball of tufted wool, on a hat perhaps" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
