I believe the answer is:
outdone
'surpassed' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)
'unconscious beaten' is the wordplay.
'unconscious' becomes 'out' (similar in meaning).
'beaten' becomes 'done' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'out'+'done'='OUTDONE'
