Crossword Genius

Unconventional people not paired at dances (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

oddballs

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'unconventional people' is the definition.
'oddballs' can be an answer for 'people' (oddball is a kind of person). I'm unsure of the 'unconventional' bit.

'not paired at dances' is the wordplay.
'not paired at' becomes 'odd' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'dances' becomes 'balls' (ball is a kind of dance).
'odd'+'balls'='ODDBALLS'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for oddballs that I've seen before include "making up half the FA Cup draw?" , "peculiar characters" , "Weirdos" , "nuts" , "Strange or eccentric people" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
