Up or down? Its position is largely gender based (6,4)
I believe the answer is:
toilet seat
'its position is largely gender based' is the definition.
I can't tell whether this definition defines the answer.
'up or down?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'down?' could be 'eat' (downing is a kind of eating) and 'eat' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'toilets' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
