Crossword Genius

Utter plain dance movement (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

step

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This clue could be a double definition.

'utter plain dance' is the first definition.
'step' can be an answer for 'dance' (I've seen this in another clue). I'm not certain of the 'utter plain' bit.

'movement' is the second definition.
(I know that step is a type of locomotion)

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for step that I've seen before include "some progress" , "Manner of walking" , "Pace (taken one at a time?)" , "Rung, dance movement" , "Bit of mashed potato maybe" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Times.
