Vehicle impaled by both ends of barge pole (5)
I believe the answer is:
caber
'pole' is the definition.
(I know that caber is a type of pole)
'vehicle impaled by both ends of barge' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'vehicle' could be 'cab' (cab is a kind of vehicle) and 'cab' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'er' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for caber that I've seen before include "Scots projectile" , "Trimmed tree trunk tossed at Highland Games" , "It's tossed in Scotland" , "Pole tossed as a test of strength" , "The Scots throw it in sport - brace yourself" .)
