Crossword Genius

Versatile player's ball game without wings (3-7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

all-rounder

'versatile player's' is the definition.
(an all-rounder can play multiple roles)

'ball game without wings' is the wordplay.
'ball' becomes 'allround' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'game' becomes 'tetherball' (type of ball game).
'without wings' means to look at the middle letters (the letters on the edges might be called wings).
The middle letters of 'tetherball' are 'er'.
'allround'+'er'='ALL-ROUNDER'

(Other definitions for all-rounder that I've seen before include "One skilled in many subjects" , "One with ability in many aspects of their trade" , "Versatile person" , "One good at several things" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
