Crossword Genius

Verse the clergyman mostly cut? (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

clerihew

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'verse' is the definition.
(clerihew is a kind of verse)

'the clergyman mostly cut?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'cut?' could be 'hew' (I've seen this before) and 'hew' is found within the answer.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for clerihew that I've seen before include "Humorous verse form" , "Two-lined comic verse" , "Bentley's jingle" , "Satire of rhymed couplets about a famous person" , "few personal lines" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
