Crossword Genius

Walked back around a chap sleeping (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

dormant

'sleeping' is the definition.
('dormant' can be a synonym of 'sleeping')

'walked back around a chap' is the wordplay.
'walked' becomes 'trod' (treading is a kind of walking).
'back' says the letters should be written backwards.
'around' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'a chap' becomes 'man' (I've seen this before).
'trod' in reverse letter order is 'dort'.
'dort' going around 'man' is 'DORMANT'.

(Other definitions for dormant that I've seen before include "Temporarily quiet" , "Deeply sleeping" , "Inert" , "Lying inactive as if in sleep" , "asleep" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
