Crossword Genius

Wet sound coming from part of chair back (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

splat

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'chair back' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'wet sound coming from part' is the wordplay.
'wet sound coming' becomes 'sp' (I can't explain this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'from' says to put letters next to each other.
'part' becomes 'lat' (lat is a kind of part).
'sp'+'lat'='SPLAT'

'of' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for splat that I've seen before include "Sound of a soft wet landing" , "amusing noise" , "Noise on landing" , "Noise of soft wet impact; part of a chair back" , "Piece of wood in a chair back" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
