What emigrants do - leave with a sailor, by the way! (2,6)
I believe the answer is:
go abroad
'what emigrants do' is the definition.
I know nothing about this answer so I cannot judge whether this works.
'leave with a sailor by the way' is the wordplay.
'leave' becomes 'go'.
'with' is a charade indicator (letters next to each other).
'a sailor' becomes 'ab' (abbreviation for able seaman).
'by the way' becomes 'road' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'go'+'ab'+'road'='GO ABROAD'
Can you help me to learn more?
I've seen this clue in The Irish Independent.
