What might be left when the wheels come off? (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

axle

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'wheels come off?' is the definition.
I can't tell whether this definition defines the answer.

'what might be left when' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'left' could be 'l' (common abbreviation) and 'l' is found within the answer.
'when' could be 'e' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'e' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'ax' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'the' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for axle that I've seen before include "Pin in revolver" , "Rod of wheelbase" , "Rod making wheels turn" , "What supports rotor" , "Shaft with wheels attached" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
