Crossword Genius

Where it's very nice to take friends out dancing (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

palais

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'where it's very nice to' is the definition.
I know nothing about this answer so I cannot judge whether this works.

'friends out dancing' is the wordplay.
'friends' becomes 'pals' (pal is a kind of friend).
'out' means to remove the last letter.
'dancing' becomes 'ais' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'pals' with its final letter taken away is 'pal'.
'pal'+'ais'='PALAIS'

'take' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for palais that I've seen is " dance-hall".)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
